Do you suffer with unresolved back pain and neck pain?

If you have persistent low back or neck pain we offer a specialised treatment programme which combines manual therapy with the latest technological advances in spinal care.

What is IDD Therapy?

Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy treatment is a technologically advanced non-surgical spinal treatment for people seeking targeted back pain relief.

IDD aims to decompress the spine in order to:

  • reduce pressure on nerves
  • improve disc health
  • improve soft tissue function

Who is suitable for IDD Therapy treatment?

Candidates for IDD treatment are typically people who have had back pain for more than three months. They may have had a number of different manual therapy treatments already and find that back pain is still adversely affecting their life.

Many patients who have a course of IDD Therapy treatment have been taking pain medication regularly to help their discomfort and may be considering injections or in extreme cases, surgery.

Patients may have the following conditions:

  • Prolapsed, herniated or bulging disc (lumbar or cervical)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Nerve pain (sciatica) and/or altered sensation ('pins and needles')
  • Chronic low back and neck pain

New patients undergo an assessment which includes a review of current or recent MRI results. If appropriate imaging is not available an MRI will be obtained so that we can determine whether IDD Therapy is appropriate and if so which disc level of the spine to target.

How does IDD Therapy work?

IDD Therapy employs a computer controlled and directed distraction (drawing apart) force to the spine in order to achieve spinal decompression. This distraction force can be provided more consistently and for longer than a manual practitioner can provide with hands.

  • IDD Therapy provides slow rhythmically alternating stretching forces to the particular lumbar or cervical vertebra or structure causing pain and dysfunction.
  • It uses gentle distraction of targeted spinal segments to remove pressure from spinal structures including the discs and nerves.
  • The intermittent distraction forces improve fluid dynamics within the tissues, including the discs, to improve mobility in the spinal joints.

What happens in a treatment session?

There is no need to remove clothing for treatment, although generally loose fitting clothing is appropriate. The patient is carefully harnessed, in a standing position, and then guided onto the treatment table. The treatment table is lowered to the horizontal. The aim is to make the patient as relaxed as possible - indeed some patients actually go to sleep.

Each treatment on the machine lasts approximately 25 minutes, which is the time needed to work the spinal structures adequately to help bring about the physiological changes we are seeking.

Before treatments, we apply infrared heat to the area to increase blood flow into the soft tissues. After treatments, we apply cold packs to reduce any post treatment inflammation and encourage improved disc healing.

How many treatments are needed?

Patients differ in their conditions and symptoms. For some patients, improvements in symptoms are noticed after just a couple of sessions. This happens as pressure is taken off compressed discs and nerves. However, when aiming to achieve long lasting therapeutic changes in the structure of damaged spinal tissues, as shown by before and after MRI scans, 15 - 20 sessions are usually recommended.

The experience of North American Medical, who developed the machine we use, is that approximately 25% of patients will require a course of up to 10 sessions and that 75% will achieve symptom relief with 20 sessions or less.

It is important to remember that no one treatment method above all others can guarantee cure: there are many different causes of neck or back pain and each patient is different. For selected patients, however, there is reasonable cause to believe that IDD Therapy can be beneficial in reducing symptoms and improving a patient's quality of life.

It is possible to try a short trial on the machine prior to committing to a course of therapy. All costs are discussed prior to treatment. While we recommend the 15-20 session protocol we also understand that some flexibility may be required. We would discuss the best approach for you - but would encourage new patients to commit to 5 sessions initially. After an initial course of treatment, some patients maintain the progress achieved with single infrequent top sessions a few times a year.

We monitor treatment at each stage with internationally recognised outcome measures as part of a commitment to evidence-based medicine.

IDD Experience

Sally Lansdale recently joined the team at Devonshire Osteopaths. A highly skilled osteopath of over 25 years, Sally has a strong empathy with patients, having been a back pain-sufferer herself.

She also owns a large osteopathic clinic in Herefordshire where she has built a reputation for excellent osteopathic care and innovative treatment methods.

Sally was one of the first osteopaths in the UK to champion IDD Therapy spinal decompression treatment, installing an IDD machine at her clinic after experiencing the treatment for herself. Sally continues to trailblaze the treatment and provides training for IDD Therapy providers in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
